The Woodlands Cemetery is located at 4000 Woodland Avenue in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (Philadelphia County). The coordinates are 39° 56' 50" N, 75° 12' 9" W.

The Woodlands Cemetery was established in 1840, and it is still active. It is very large, and there are many interesting gravestones to look at. Many notable people are buried at the cemetery; for a list of notable people and a map, click this link.

Before The Woodlands was a cemetery, it was the home of Andrew Hamilton (Speaker of the Pennsylvania House). Sometime between 1786-1793, his grandson, William Hamilton, purchased the home. He remodeled the home and tranformed the grounds into a huge, beautiful garden. At one time he had over 9,000 different plant species in the garden. He lived there until his death in 1813.

In 1840 the Woodlands Cemetery Company purchased the grounds and mansion. The land was perfect for creating a rural cemetery. Today the cemetery and mansion are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It truly is a beautiful place to visit.
