George sent me the following information about Mountain Grove Cemetery:
Mountain Grove Cemetery is located in Bridgeport, Connecticut at the corner of Dewey Street and North Avenue. The coordinates are 41.1772" N, 73.2184"W. It is fully active and well maintained. A river runs down the west perimeter and along the southern border. Two small round lakes add to the beauty of these grounds.
The Cemetery, according to our local paper, was established by Phineas T. Barnum and his friends in 1849. Mr. Barnum is the P.T. Barnum; famous for his nineteenth century exhibits. All the monuments and graves from an older cemetery were transferred here in an effort to eliminate future competition. Mr. Barnum wanted to make a beautiful park-like cemetery in the growing fashion of English cemeteries.
Mr. Barnum rests here. Only a few feet west of his marker is the grave of Charles S. Stratton, known internationally as General Tom Thumb, who grew to only three feet, eight inches, and was part of the traveling Barnum exhibit. The image at the top of the marker is supposedly a life-size statue of Mr. Stratton.
