Evergreen Cemetery is located on Baltimore Street in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (Adams County). The coordinates are 39° 49' 8" N, 77° 13' 50" W.
Evergreen Cemetery was established in 1854 and is still active today. The oldest gravestones are located closest to the gatehouse. Many of the gravestones were damaged during the Civil War since much of the Gettysburg battle took place on this hill.
You can see Jennie Wade's grave here, the only civilian killed during the battle. There is also a monument dedicated to Elizabeth Thorn and the other women of the Civil War. Even though she was six months pregnant at the time, she buried the first ninety-one soldiers who died in the Battle of Gettysburg. She was in charge of Evergreen Cemetery while her husband, the regular cemetery caretaker, was off fighting for the Union Army.
