Elmwood Cemetery is located on the east side of Mount Pleasant Avenue, about 3 blocks south of Main Street, in Lancaster, Ohio (Berne Township, Fairfield County). The coordinates are 39° 42' 36.14" N, 82° 35' 25.81" W.
Elmwood Cemetery was established in 1838. It is one of the oldest, most historical cemeteries in Lancaster. Several famous people are buried here, including:
- Henry Giesy, a Civil War General
- Joseph and Dorothy Hunter, Lanacaster's first white settlers
- Charles Sherman, William T. Sherman's father
- Darius Tallmadge, the "Stagecoach King"
- Frances Stanberry
- Scott James, Lancaster's first black police officer who was also a Civil War soldier
Elmwood Cemetery is full of interesting old gravestones, many with detailed carvings. The cemetery is very well maintained.
In October 2005 I received an e-mail from Michelle, a website visitor who had some creepy experiences at the cemetery:
There are so many graves at Elmwood Cemetery, it is hard to get though them all. Of course you have famous Lancastrians, but there are so many more ghosts. A friend and I have seen a little girl in white, sitting quietly on top of a gravestone. As we approached her, she vanished. The little coffin shaped box is the grave for a female child. Check out the rumors of those hauntings...but be warned, some of those you encounter are evil spirits. My friend has been harmed walking in Elmwood Cemetery. Avoid the graves further in the field. That's where she was attacked. She was clawed until she bled. I don't know, maybe she cut herself. But I find a very menacing soul there. I'm terrified of some of the graves. And I don’t scare very easily.
In January 2006 I received an e-mail from Marie Liptak regarding Elmwood Cemetery:
I grew up on the corner of Maple and Locust Streets, and played at Elmwood Park (which is partially in the cemetery) my whole life. My grandmother's home was directly across the street. We have walked through that cemetery during
the day and night. I am now 30 years old, and never ever have encountered a ghost there. I do believe in them. Both my grandparents, my uncle, and my sister are all buried there. One would think that I would see something. I am an avid ghost story reader and have never heard of any haunting there. You want to see a ghost, go to the Ridges in Athens.
