Diane G. sent me the following e-mail about Knickerbocker Cemetery:

Take Farm Road to Market Road (Route 67) to Knickerbocker Road; go past the Knickerbocker mansion; the cemetery is surrounded by a stone wall and is in excellent condition. Many of the marble stones are being destroyed by the acid rain and the severe weather we get here in New York. The Knickerbocker Historical Society is restoring the late 18th century Family Mansion. The site was occupied by the Knickerbockers for 250 years. It is located a few yards up from the cemetery. You will be able to receive a tour of the mansion, and you will be able to wander the cemetery freely.

This is part of my childhood stomping grounds. Prior to the restoration the mansion was in great despair - the front wall was tumbled to the ground, the roof was caved in, and the neighboring kids would vandalize what they could. Many ghost and occult stories circulated for years regarding this property. Its location is a big reason for this. It is located on an isolated dirt road in a wooded area. There is a farm house across the street, but there isn't another home in either direction for at least a mile or two. Back in the days it was a very creepy place to visit. My daughter's father, whom is unfortunately now deceased, and some of his friends told me a story of how he found a skull in the basement. He did keep it for a while, but wouldn't tell me why or what he did with it. All I know is he decided it wasn't something he wanted to keep around. I wish I knew the full story!
