Cruz Rodriguez sent me the following information about the town's history:

Charles Stillman was our original founder of what we now call our city Brownsville, but back in the early 1800's, he was the benifactor life source. He also donated the land for the Old Brownsville Cemetery. General Brown fought in the Mexican-American War and won here, so they named the city and fort after him.
