Adam Maroney sent me the following information about Barnett African American Cemetery:
The cemetery is located in Lyon County, Kentucky in the Land Between the Lakes National Park on a large, wooded hill overlooking Kentucky Lake. It is a long and difficult trek through briers and brambles to reach this cemetery. It is badly neglected and has not been used for many years. At one time, there was a small church/school adjacent to the cemetery and a small community existed around it composed of former slaves. Many of these former slaves and their families are buried there. Most of the graves are marked only with homemade crosses; however, there are many graves that do not even have these. There are old house foundations and wells along the way to the cemetery, and it is fair to assume that these are the remains of the homes of some of the people buried there. Although it cannot be seen in the pictures because of the dense overgrowth, you can find pieces of shells that were used to adorn the graves and you can also find shards of purple, decorative glass that are probably remnants of flower vases. The cemetery is far from civilization and gives you a sense of isolation while there.
