Cholera Cemetery



Sandusky's status as a major Great Lakes port city was a mixed blessing in the 1800s. Along with the money and status came disease. One reminder of this is the lakefront cemetery where victims of a major cholera outbreak were buried. In their haste to rid the city of infection, many say that sick people were buried when they were merely unconscious and not yet dead. These poor souls, buried alive, still haunt the cholera cemetery. For many years the grounds were barely tended because people were afraid of infection, as well as the vengeful spirits of the dead. The cemetery can be found west of downtown, along the lakefront.
